Accelerated Reader

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

Ebook options/Digital Learning:

BookFlix pairs fiction and nonfiction books right there on the site and offers kids the option to listen to the book or read it, has games, provides links to more information, and much more. Go to https://bookflix.digital.scholastic.com and log in with the username Learning20 and the password Clifford.
Scholastic Learn at Home https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.html The PK-K and 1-2 lessons are BookFlix lessons, but many of these will appeal to older students as well. I love how Scholastic pairs a fiction book and nonfiction book on various topics or subjects. Day 1 of Learning at Home is a lesson on Animal Studies--Spiders. They paired the fiction book Diary of a Spider with the nonfiction book A Spiderling Grows Up. No log in is needed for these lessons. There are also lessons for 3-5 and 6+.
Parents and students can read and check out ebooks with Hoopla, eKids Read, and rbDigital through the Catoosa Library. Although rbDigital might be geared for adults and teens, there are still a number of books for younger students. Many of our parents AND students have library cards (we've done a library campaign the last couple of years), so this might be an option for many of you. https://www.catoosacountylibrary.org/ Scroll down just a bit on the page to see the links for the programs. You can download the apps on your personal devices (iPad, tablet, etc.) or go to the sites in a web browser. You'll need a Catoosa County Library card number to log in--either the student's, a parent's, etc.--but it's pretty straightforward and easy to do. If you are not a Catoosa County resident, check your public library’s site because many of them also offer these programs, and you can sign up through them.
AR--Students can read and test on any books that they already have at their homes--IF AR has a test for them. Your teacher will let you know if they need to follow their normal levels or just read whatever books they'd like to during the at-home learning days. You can go to AR Book Finder to check the books in your home to see if there's a quiz for them and to find out the level: https://www.arbookfind.com The students in Catoosa County can now take AR tests at home, and BPS has opened it up for 24/7 access.

Kindle offers a lot of ebooks for kids, so parents might want to check that out, too, especially if they are Prime members or have Kindle Unlimited. There are tons of free Kindle books for kids, too, and you don't have to be a Prime member or Kindle Unlimited member to "buy" them when they are free. The Kindle app or e-reader is free. A quick search pulled up this Web site that advertises free Kindle ebooks--many are only free for a day or two, so you have to act fast. https://www.freebooksy.com/read/genre/childrens/ I don't know anything about this site, but I know there are tons of others that do the same type of thing to get the word out about free ebook offers.
